Discovery Day
On Wednesday, February 24, Middle School students participated in our first annual Discovery Day, sponsored by the NJHS council, and led by Spanish teacher Lourdes Saks and Form 7 English teacher Chase Hebert. Discovery Day was not a traditional career day, and included a variety of interests, hobbies, and life experiences. Students attended several sessions through the course of the day. Below are just a few examples of the rich and engaging options in which students participated:
Allison Sharawi, the child life specialist at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, brought Marcus, her labrador-golden retriever mix. Marcus supports and helps cheer up young children and families at the hospital to better their experience during their recovery.
Dr. Bradley Book, a veterinarian at Blue Pearl Emergency Animal Hospital, visited with students to share about his career path and life as a critical care vet. Dr. Book brought lots of pictures of animals he has treated, and students enjoyed hearing about the different cases he has had over the years.
Ms. Rachel Gilmour, an expert in entertainment makeup and costuming, showed students various applications of makeup, from film to theater.
Students discovered that history is more than memorizing dates - it is sharing stories! The SA African American Community Archive and Museum shared their work to collect, preserve, and share the cultural heritage of African Americans in the San Antonio region.
Students learned from Rene’e Park and Mona Lisa Montgomery, two dance artists from the San Antonio Folk Dance Festival. Perhaps the most exciting part for our students was learning traditional Hawaiian hula!
Opening up the insides of both dated and modern pinball machines, SMH parent Tony Chbeir shared his knowledge of the inner workings of these elaborate machines. He showed students how to take them apart, and put them back together, and allowed them to test their skills.
Saint Mary’s Hall faculty member Matt Montez shared his passion for roasting coffee. Students were taken through an explanation of the roasting and tasting process and then it was their turn to show what they learned. Coffee beans were weighed, ground, and steeped in water until tasting time. The tasting provided much excitement and for many it created a new appreciation for coffee or reaffirmed their love for it.
In “Saving the Earth One Bucket at Time”, Kate Jalcedo stressed the importance of recycling our organic waste so that nutrients can be made available again in the form of soil.
Former Spurs Coyote, Rob Wicall, inspired our students with a message about following your dreams.
SMH alum, McKenna Kinder, shared her experiences in Social Media Marketing and how the pandemic forced her to establish her own company, The Kinder Influence. She shared stories of failures, successes, and how overcoming unforeseen obstacles can give birth to new creative endeavors.
Representatives from Musical Bridges taught about the value music has in a community and how it helps bring together people from different backgrounds.
Our key speaker, Noelle Needham, zoomed into our classrooms to discuss her experience as a professional hockey athletic trainer. She held a Q&A with students, who were engaged participants.
NJHS is very thankful for the willingness of our speakers to come and present, as well as the enthusiasm of the students. We look forward to next year’s Discovery Day.
Area B Convention Results
On Saturday, February 26, 16 MS students competed at the Area B Latin Convention at Clark HS. Here are the results:
Certamen - Certamen is a quiz-bowl style game for students of Latin, Greek, and classical civilizations. It allows students to demonstrate their knowledge of the ancient peoples, languages, and cultures, and the relationships between those topics and the modern world. The matches are fun, competitive, informative, and compelling for students.
Our core SMH Certamen team members, Jay Huang (F8), Amruta Patel (F8), and Bianca Rodriguez (F8) have worked very hard this year, attending many hours of Zoom practice on Saturday mornings and studying reams of detailed notes on Roman History, Greek Mythology, and Latin language and culture. They are joined by Gaige Lipscomb (F9), Aarav Gupta (F7), and Jacob Kollars (F7) who participated on the SMH novice Certamen team at earlier invitational tournaments.
The following six schools competed in the Novice Level preliminary rounds on Friday evening: Antonian HS, Clark HS, Great Hearts Forest Oaks MS, Johnson HS, Reagan HS, and Saint Mary’s Hall MS. Amruta, Jay, and Bianca were unbeaten throughout the three preliminary rounds and made finals. On Saturday afternoon they played admirably throughout the final to win with 150 points, beating the high school teams at both Antonian (90 pts) and Clark (40 pts). Congratulations to our 2022 Area B Certamen Champions!
Pentathlon - The pentathlon is a general Latin skills test, encompassing reading comprehension, grammar, derivatives, culture, Roman history, and Greek mythology.
All our students gained a level of recognition on this test, winning 1-4 sweepstakes points for our school. Eight were recognized at the highest level.
Decathlon - Only the keenest classicists take the Decathlon. It is similar to the pentathlon, but it is a much more challenging test.
This year, three Form 8 students took this test. See all individual results below.

Middle School Recognizes Pi Day
“We love Pi Day to the core! March 14 is 3 - 1 4!” The week before Spring Break, math teachers Missy Northington, Rebecca Diaz, and Jennifer Cordova began teaching students about pi, the constant ratio between a circle’s circumference and its diameter. Teachers shared several songs and other resources to help students begin to memorize digits of pi for the annual contest. Will Carter (Form 10) set the school record for the most digits memorized (483!), and he put together a special presentation to share his strategy with middle school students.
On Pi Day, advisories began the day by creating a chain link of pi digits which were then joined with other advisories’ chains. The 160-digit pi chain was displayed in the Dining Hall just in time for a special lunch consisting of chicken pot pie and pies of various flavors! Happy Pi Day!

Form 8 Field Trip: April 4-6, 2022
On this field trip, students and faculty chaperones will travel to Port Aransas and Corpus Christi and stay at the Mustang Island Episcopal Conference Center in Port Aransas. The buses for this trip will depart on Monday morning and return on Wednesday afternoon by the end of the school day.
One of the fun activities during the three days is a trawler boat excursion in Port Aransas bay to study the various marine life found in the bay habitat. In Corpus Christi, students will enjoy time aboard the USS Lexington as well as a tour of the Texas State Aquarium and all of its fun educational offerings. One of the highlights of this trip occurs on the private beach at the Mustang Island Episcopal Conference Center where all students will take a class in sand sculpting and then participate in a team sand sculpting competition between class members. Faculty chaperones will serve as judges! This trip always proves to be one of the most popular events of our Middle School experience and we are excited to be able to resume this fun and educational trip.

Kindergarten Engineers!
In Lower School science lab, kindergarten students participated in a STEAM activity exploring force and motion. Science teacher Bitsy Mayberry presented an engineering challenge to make a sled using a specific set of materials that would slide down a ramp. Mrs. Mayberry said, “It was a huge success! Every sled worked, and I continue to be impressed with these students’ logic and reasoning.” Watch a video of their work HERE.
Form 2 "Campout"
Allegra Brahin (F3) and some of her friends had a great time “Camping Out” on Friday, February 25. Thank you to her family for supporting SMH by bidding on this campout in the Saint Mary’s Hall online auction last May! Allegra said, “We had a blast, and it was so much fun supporting our school in such a fun way.” The girls enjoyed hiking around the campus as they collected crystals, fossils, and other findings. Then, they warmed up in the tent with flashlights and stories as the Form 2 teachers grilled hamburgers and s’mores. According to the Form 2 teachers, the girls’ favorite part was their glow stick creations and playing flashlight tag on the playground in the dark.
Annual Form 5 Williamsburg Trip
Many Form 5 students and parents participated in the annual Williamsburg trip over spring break. Form 5 teacher Claire Damarodas said, “We had a wonderful time learning more about the founding of our nation. Our trip started at the site of the “real” Jamestown settlement. Astonished at its small size, we also learned it was the site of our nation’s start in “self-governance.” Other excursions included visiting the Highlands, the home of President James Monroe and Monticello, President Thomas Jefferson’s home. We loved our visit to Colonial Williamsburg, where we toured the Capitol, the Governor’s Palace, and various trade shops. A ghost tour in the evening provided thrills, along with lots of learning! On our last day we visited the Yorktown Victory Center and learned about the last major battle of the American Revolution. Most importantly, we came away with a sense of awe at how special our nation is and realized each day is a new beginning in our experiment in democracy, a special gift which allows each of to participate in our nation’s government in various ways.

Sculpture & Design Students Learn about Prototyping and Manufacturing
Sparked by student questions in the studio about prototyping and manufacturing, the Honors and Senior Studio Sculpture students visited Precision Group’s design and manufacturing facility with Upper School art teachers Mr. Cassie and Mr. Petersen. Guided by former SMH parent Anna Wulfe (Sam ’17, Bella 18’), students toured Mrs. Wulfe’s family’s company, learning all of the steps involved in what they do.
Students were able to see all the elements involved from the initial product idea to prototyping and engineering for manufacture to the actual production of the molds from blocks of metal, tolerance testing and final production of molded plastic and metal products. These included everything from construction components to medical devices to elements of vessels launched into orbit. The group was able to witness processes in action from micro laser welding to complex geometry machining. Mrs. Wulfe also walked the group through business considerations for a family-run boutique manufacturing company.
SMH Visual and Media Arts Team Learning Event
Saint Mary’s Hall teachers Kellen Stanley (Lower School Art Teacher), BJ Pyrc (Middle School Art Teacher), Logan Blanco (Upper School Painting Teacher), Nate Cassie (Upper School Sculpture & Design Teacher), Kyle Petersen (Upper School Photography Teacher) and Will Underwood (Upper School Digital Cinema) took part in a unique day of professional development late last month. The all day intensive allowed them the opportunity to both learn, brainstorm new initiatives and partnerships, and plan curriculum. In addition, they toured Ruby City with director Elyse Gonzales, learned from SaySi staff member Ashley Perez, and met with Director Riley Robinson of Artpace, who gave them a personal tour of the Artpace exhibit “Mystic Toolbox.” SMH student artists will begin reaping the benefits this quarter of these talented educators’ planning time.
Athletics
Athletics
Women's Lacrosse Starts Their Journey
Saint Mary’s Hall starting writing a new chapter in the long athletics history of the school. Women’s Lacrosse faced off against Reagan High School in the inaugural game. While the outcome is not what the Barons hoped for, the team showed spirit, heart, and grit, while laying the foundation for the upstart program.
Baseball off to Hot Start
Barons Baseball is off to a fast start. Heading into spring break, the Barons were able to post the best start in program history, carrying a winning record into the break. The competition will heat up quickly with district play right around the corner.
Freshmen Augie Grohman led the team into break with his first career no-hitter, thrown against Founders Classical Academy in a lop-sided victory for the Barons.
The Barons set their sights on their first district game against St. Anthony, Friday, March 25th at home, 600pm.
Golf Continues Winning Ways
It’s been a great start for Jack Archer '22 and a fantastic beginning to the season for Julia Garcia '23. Jack has led the boys in scoring in each of the first 3 events and continued to improve with each outing. Julia, continuing her undefeated status, picked up where she left off last season dominating the competition. She has won her first 3 starts of the season in convincing fashion.
On February 28, the Barons competed at Fair Oaks Ranch where Julia finished -2 with 8 birdies. Her coaches stated “Julia is not only a phenomenal player, she is also a genuine individual. Several coaches from other teams consistently mention what a good mentor and example she is for those other players in her group and those in which she comes in contact with. Julia is patient and helps others with rules, golf conduct and is an example of what a student athletes should look like.”
Men's Lacrosse Remains Unbeaten
The Saint Mary’s Hall Men’s lacrosse team is still going strong with an undefeated record, now sitting at 7-0. Since the last write up, the Barons have played George Ranch, St. Michaels Catholic Academy, and Antonian College Prep.
George Ranch HS came down from Houston to face the Barons and fell 14-6. Despite some early struggles with possessing the ball and controlling the tempo, SMH made great strides during the game and ended with a well-earned victory.
In their last game before Spring Break, our gentlemen in purple took a bus to Crusader Stadium in Austin to take on Saint Michael’s. After four unanswered goals in the first few minutes of the game, the Barons found themselves trailing for the first time this season. After some fantastic clearing by Peyton Randolph '22 and some speedy zig zags from Justus Klegerg '25, SMH came away with a 13-6 win in their first home game.
The most recent game against Antonian was an excellent return from Spring Break for the Barons. The team moved the ball around and maintained discipline even after taking an early lead SMH ended with a 16-2 victory.
As district games approach, the Barons will face some real tests, namely TMI and Alamo Heights. Be sure to come out to support the Barons!
Barons Track Runs Up to Austin
In the Track & Field team's first traveling regular season meet, just a few members of the team who were not already gone on Spring Break represented the Barons in fine fashion as they traveled to Austin to face 22 private and public schools in competition.
Our Boys Varsity team was only three members strong with Patrick Lang '23, Chris Chan '24, and Ian Garza '25, and they finished in 11th place overall, scoring 23 points.
Kicking the day off was our sole male field event competitor Patrick Lang, who won the Varsity Boys High Jump, clearing 5'10" for a new personal best mark and the gold medal. Lang also pulled more points in for the team in his 5th place finish in the 400 meters at 55.04. His third event of the day was the 100 meters, where he ran 12.63 for 10th place in a field of over 30 sprinters. Chris Chan took to the track with over 30 competitors for the first race of the day that included a Baron, running the first of his three personal bests for the day in the 800 meters in a time of 2:03.20 for 4th place. Later he ran the 400 meters in 55.18, taking 6th and wrapped up his day running the 1600 meters and taking 8th overall in a time of 4:50.19. Freshman Ian Garza stepped up to represent the Barons in the Varsity ranks and placed 14th in the 200 meters with nearly 40 runners in the competition. He also logged in a 12.80 in the 100 meters, which put him at 15th place.
Our Women’s team was led by Captain Remy White '22 who started the day with a 2nd place silver medal in the high jump at 4' 8". In running events, she scored points for her team in the 100 meters running a 14.74 for 6th place and 29.42 in the 200 meters, taking 8th place overall in another large field of over 30 runners. Freshman Madison Winston and Sophomore Jay Vasan were the only other field event competitors as they threw in the Shot Put. Vasan took 8th place in a throw of 23' 2 1/4" and Winston was 10th overall with a best of 22' 1". Winston also had strong showings in the 100 meters, running 14.44 for 13th place and the 200 meters 29.53 taking 9th place overall in Varsity Girls. Marissa Garza '23 who ran her first ever the 100 meters in a solid time of 16.68.
In the Junior Varsity competition, Kate Whittington '24 put points on the board with her 7th place 1:18.15 performance in the 400 meters. Lainey Hopkins '23 was the sole other JV competitor who also had a great showing in the 400 meters at 1:21.73, good enough for 9th place and she also competed in the 200 meters running a 35.78.
