A Message From the Upper School Community Service Coordinator
The Value of Volunteerism
Thank you to our SMH community members who volunteered to distribute water to runners at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon this past Sunday, and for volunteering at many of our community service opportunities throughout the school year.
As it is the holiday season and a time of gratitude and giving, it is wonderful to see our Upper School students participating in their Food Drive and Middle School students giving back through their Pajama & Clothing Drive, which both benefit the children of Serna Elementary (check the Upper and Middle School sections of this News From the Hall for more details).
There is no doubt that volunteerism is invaluable to our society. While the thought of volunteering between soccer games and ballet practices may sound daunting for today’s full-scheduled families, there are many benefits of volunteerism for our communities, nonprofits, and most importantly, our youth. Why is volunteering important for youth? While we should support youth volunteerism to improve our communities, children and teenagers who volunteer will also see and feel transformation within themselves. Students who volunteer are more likely to perform better in school and work, and become civically-active adults. Evidence shows that volunteering, participating in service projects, and other forms of community involvement are more than feel-good activities. Through volunteering, children learn life-long skills that they need to become happy and successful adults. Volunteering provides opportunities for collaboration and problem solving that are very important for success in academics, the workplace, and personal lives. It also provides the opportunity to build strong relationships with peers and adults, and strengthens trust and a sense of community or belonging.
Volunteering is also an opportunity to make a real change in someone else’s life. It gives youth the opportunity to work through real challenges and make meaningful change. Donating a few hours of time to serve others or the community can help young minds and hearts by reminding them that they are part of something bigger than themselves, and it helps them understand that we all face problems. Most importantly, volunteering will amplify gratitude through its realization. Children who volunteer will feel the emotion of gratitude and the positive effects it has on them and their well-being.
We currently have volunteer opportunities such as Creative HeArts, CAMP's School-Year Program, and Book Buddies for NISD - Book Sorting; visit our Community Service page on the SMH Community Portal for more details on these and all of our service opportunities. Many blessings to all during this holiday season!
Sincerely,
Elsa Tonone De Sala

A Message from the Head of Middle School
In just a few weeks, we will have completed our first semester of the 2021-2022 school year.
Can that be really true? I am so proud of all of our students, faculty, staff, and parents for everything that has been done to keep us safe, engaged, and learning on campus! In this season of giving thanks, it is with gratitude that I thank our Middle School team for being present every day, building relationships and memories, and teaching and guiding our young adolescents. It is with gratitude that I thank our students for showing up each day ready to learn, to challenge themselves and to provide insight and new ideas of how we can make the Middle School environment a better place. It is with gratitude that I thank our parents for sharing your child(ren) with SMH and trusting us to provide them with the best school experience. There is no doubt the past few years have seen some difficulty in the social and emotional growth of our children (which can be exacerbated by the many changes already happening to Middle School students), but together we have overcome many obstacles, especially this school year; we will continue to move forward in this endeavor to see that our students are given the opportunity to grow socially, emotionally, academically, athletically, and artistically to be successful now and in the future. And so, as we end another semester, I invite all to enjoy a Spirit Week of Thanks during the week of December 13:
- Monday, December 13

CSC Presents World Kindness Day
Community Service Council (CSC) members recently visited advisories to give a presentation about World Kindness Day, which is an international holiday celebrated every year on November 13. Students colored kindness pages, and CSC members posted them throughout the campus in hopes of keeping kindness at the center of every interaction we have with each other. Students were challenged to intentionally commit at least one act of kindness on World Kindness Day as well as every other day of the year. Remember to practice kindness daily because kindness is contagious. Kindness makes you the most beautiful person in the world. Happy World Kindness Day!
Intro to Robotics News
Our Intro Robotics class held the traditional Sumobot battles on November 18. Innovation and creativity are our focus in designing and programming our EV3 Sumobots. Winning or losing is not the best indicator of the Sumobot design. This semester, Robotics/Computer Science/STEM Teacher Hong Zhou has several students who researched extensively on previous EV3 Sumobots before deciding on a final design. Some students spent extra time on developing multiple strategic programs for different opponents. Some exciting battles have been assembled into this video. View it above. Battles from previous seasons have been published on the same Youtube channel.
For the remainder of this semester, the class will enter the free-building phase. The students will explore existing EV3 models and choose one to build. Their work will be showcased later in another video.
Form 7 Science Cell Project
Before the Thanksgiving Break, Middle School Science Teacher Patti Nicoll’s Form 7 students created a giant cell for guests to visit and learn about various cell organelle functions as well as invaders. Their models were also used in class to reinforce functions as well as interactions between organelles within cells.
Clothing and Outerwear Drive for Serna Elementary School
Serna Elementary School is in great need of children’s clothing this year.
This includes gently used pants, shirts, skirts, blouses, dresses, and outerwear in sizes 3T-14 for both boys and girls. We are also accepting new pairs of shoes, socks, and underwear. All donations may be dropped off in the classrooms of National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) sponsors, Middle School English Teacher Chase Hebert or Middle School Spanish Teacher Lourdes Saks.
Serna Elementary students will be very grateful for your generous help this winter.
National French Week!
Middle School French students began national French Week on November 8. World Languages and Cultures Teacher Kristen Villalvazo’s Form 6 Discovery French class was very busy learning about French-speaking countries around the world. Their research and decorative posters were displayed along the cafeteria windows. Students learned about the popular French game known as pétanque (similar to bocce ball) and perfected the tossing technique in a competitive game played during class. Students practiced singing the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise,” and Form 6 students created menus for the cafeteria lunch tables.
SAGE Dining Services® prepared a delicious French meal on Thursday and the Discovery French class sang "La Marseillaise" at the end of lunch. The game of Francophone culture Kahoot, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French, was also a big hit. The overall winner was an Upper School student who inspired the Middle School students to continue studying French through the AP level. Middle School Advisories also competed in a Francophone culture Kahoot, which was won by Middle School Art Teacher Benjamin Pyrc’s Advisory. They received French pencils for their success. Students wrapped up National French Week by receiving letters from French pen pals who live in the small farming community of St.Chély D’Apcher and writing back to them. Vive le français!
Form 6 English Discusses Literary Concepts
To wrap up their novel study for The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963, Form 6 English Teacher Deborah McInerney's students held a Sticky Note Discussion in which they demonstrated their understanding of the literary concepts covered during the reading of the novel. During the discussion, students made great connections in their thinking which helped them dig deeper into their conversation about the characters, author's tone, and the figurative-language devices the author used to develop the plot of the novel. It was a great opportunity to see how much these Form 6 students had learned!
Pajama Drive for Serna Elementary Students
Saint Mary’s Hall Middle School students are hosting their annual pajama drive for Serna Elementary School, our sister school down the street. Many families at Serna Elementary are struggling to provide basic necessities, so the pajamas will be a gift of hope for them this Christmas. Having something warm that they can call their own is an amazing feeling to provide to a child in need. During these unprecedented times, we know that those students need warm pajamas more than ever, and we need your help!
This is what we need:
- New two-piece pajamas
- Appropriate for winter weather
- Sizes 3T to 16 for both boys and girls
Bennett or Bailey teams will receive points for every donated pajama pair, and if the Middle School reaches their pajama goal, the entire school will be rewarded with a Pajama Day! Please help us put a smile on the face of a Serna Elementary student this winter.
You may drop off your donations in the classrooms of National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) sponsors, Middle School English Teacher Chase Hebert or Middle School Spanish Teacher Lourdes Saks. The pajama drive will end on December 7.
A huge thank you in advance to a very generous Saint Mary’s Hall Middle School family!

Hanukkah Celebrated in Form 1 Class
Form 1 Teacher Jennifer Lee’s class was so pleased to welcome the Nathan Family and the Dreszer Family as they shared their Hanukkah traditions. Students learned about the history of Hanukkah, and ate latkes, applesauce, and donuts. They lit menorahs, listened to traditional Hebrew blessings, and sang "Oh, Hanukkah!" The fun continued throughout the as students played dreidel games and reading Hanukkah stories. Mrs. Lee said, “What a wonderful experience it was for all of us.”
Toys for Tots
The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys each year and distributes the toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children throughout our local community. We invite you to participate in this Lower School Community Service Project by donating an unwrapped toy or game for a child who is your age. The Toys for Tots collection begins next Monday. Lower School students will be at carpool each morning December 6 – December 10 to receive your contributions.
