ONE|SMH Hybrid (Yellow)
The ONE|SMH Hybrid (Yellow) Phase will begin September 8 with on-campus classes plus an option for continued learning from home. We have developed schedules that allow for social distancing, reduced density in classrooms and during lunch, and extra transition time between periods.
SMH faculty have studied the best approaches to hybrid teaching and learning: in-person instruction; synchronous instruction, for those who cannot be on campus but can engage the academic schedule remotely in real-time; and asynchronous instruction, for those who will need to engage learning remotely but will not be able to access the live classes synchronously.
Health and Safety Measures
- First Line of Defense
- Masks
- Health Screenings
- COVID-19 Infection Plan
- Cleaning and Other Safety Measures
First Line of Defense
Masks
The primary mode of COVID-19 transmission is through respiratory droplets. Mounting evidence on masks’ ability to contain these droplets and limit the disease’s spread has informed our decision to require cloth face coverings for all persons on campus. Teachers may remove their masks during lessons in which they would impede the educational process (i.e., reading to students, Spanish class). In these cases, teachers will replace their masks with a face shield and distance themselves at least six feet from students.
Health Screenings
All individuals on campus must have a temperature below 100.0F. Screening for COVID-19 risk factors will require significant family accountability. We ask parents to keep a close eye on their children and to keep them home if they are not feeling well. Please do not come to campus if the answer is “yes” to any of these questions, which must be answered through the Magnus app daily:
- Are you experiencing shortness of breath, cough, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, or loss of taste/smell?
- Do you have a temperature of 100.0F or above?
- Have you been exposed to anyone who was diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last 14 days?
COVID-19 Infection Plan
We will follow CDC guidelines for any faculty/staff member or student who tests positive for COVID-19. These guidelines include, but are not limited to, notifying the health department of a positive case, informing anyone in our community with potential exposure while maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring the following criteria are met before the infected individual returns to campus:
- At least 72 hours have passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of medication)
- Significant improvement in symptoms
- At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared
Cleaning and Other Safety Measures
Hand Hygiene
Enhanced and intensified cleaning protocols are in place for classrooms, restrooms, and other shared spaces.
Regular times will be designated for hand washing, with a specific focus on arrival to school, while entering the classroom, and before meals. In addition, each classroom will be furnished with hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray to wipe desks and other hard surfaces upon arrival to and departure from class. Hand sanitizer stations will be placed in multiple locations to encourage hand hygiene.
Restrooms
Restrooms will be cleaned and disinfected three times throughout the school day using EPA-, OSHA-, and CDC-recommended products. Limitations will be placed on the number of people who can be in restrooms and other shared spaces at the same time.
Surfaces
Frequently touched surfaces (such as restroom facilities and doorknobs) will be cleaned throughout the day with an EPA-approved disinfectant. Increased classroom sanitation procedures will include the regular use of a Clorox Electrostatic Spray disinfectant/sanitation system in all classrooms and high-traffic areas.
Ventilation and Aerosols
High-efficiency air conditioner filters have been installed across campus to remove contaminants and discharge cleaner air. These dense filters can prevent COVID-19 droplets from circulating in School buildings.
Physical barriers, such as clear plastic sneeze guards, have been installed to prevent airborne transmission in high-traffic areas.
Visitors and Volunteers
SMH has always welcomed parents, guests, and visitors on campus daily. However, while we are in the One|SMH Virtual and Hybrid phases (outlined in the pages to come), only essential visitors will be granted access to campus. Parents will be able to drop off their children only and may not exit their vehicles. In addition, parent volunteers will engage in volunteer roles virtually or off-campus where applicable. While our parents and other volunteers are invaluable members of the SMH community, to protect the health of everyone at the School, we must limit the number of people on campus until further notice.

Knowing one another extends beyond the classroom and even our campus. At Saint Mary’s Hall, every student is known and matters. During the first few weeks of school, we pledge to you that we will engage with every student on a personal level, fulfilling our commitment of KNOW AND BE KNOWN.
We are committed to one of the most vital portions of the SMH experience—strengthening our community building efforts in our ONE|SMH Virtual (Red) Phase. Events, including Baron Bazaar, Blue Tie, Convocation, field trips, and so much more, are essential parts of the academic year. We are planning specific moments to help connect students to their faculty, our campus, and each other.

How will classroom assignments and classroom layouts change?
Classroom assignments have been changed to minimize travel throughout the School and to enhance social distancing. To keep classroom numbers small, some classes have been subdivided into smaller sections, or “advisories.” Students will either sit at individual desks six feet apart or will be separated by clear partitions. Students in the lower grades will also have designated floor space in addition to desks as optional workspaces.
How will Saint Mary’s Hall support students’ social and emotional well-being?
Saint Mary’s Hall’s commitment to students’ social and emotional learning, well-being, and growth is a critical component of our planning for fall. Faculty have built this into the planning for their courses including a daily Morning Meeting time, and the Lower School counselor is prepared to engage frequently and effectively with students, whether in the classroom or from a distance.
Will Lower School Athletics be held in the fall?
Will Extended Care be offered?
Will masks be required?
Masks will be required for all faculty, staff, and students while on campus. Teachers will determine appropriate mask breaks for students. It is highly recommended that face coverings be washed and a fresh covering worn each day
Students may provide their own face coverings which can be solid black, white, or purple or have a modest, school appropriate pattern. Masks may be personalized in accordance with current uniform guidelines. SMH logo face masks will be available in the Spirit Store for purchase.

Athletics
As we return to campus, we will begin socially distanced, in-person workouts as allowed by TAPPS guidelines. The Athletic Department will continue to monitor local and state guidelines, as well as meet with other athletic directors to stay up to date with the latest information regarding the safe return of athletics. Head coaches will work in conjunction with our Athletic Training Department to ensure we are appropriately managing the progression of workouts and practices for the safety of our student-athletes. We will remain flexible and agile and look forward to the opportunity for athletics teams to safely return to interscholastic competition.
Physical education coaches are excited and ready to welcome students back to campus. We will use outdoor spaces for PE activities as the weather allows. Limited equipment, if any, will be used; equipment will not be shared and will be cleaned and disinfected prior to its next use. The coaches will continue to share information with students to improve their overall health and wellness beyond just physical activity.

Wellness
Nurturing students’ mental health and wellness is as important to their overall success as academic achievement. Both the coronavirus pandemic and a recent public focus on long-standing racial injustice have undoubtedly affected student well-being. Consequently, we will assess and support students socially, spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally throughout the school year, whether learning is taking place on or off campus.
We plan to survey our Middle and Upper School students intermittently to better understand their emotional needs and will use that data to inform our wellness efforts. Lower School Counselor Susan Moore-Sickmann will have weekly guidance classes to support student well-being and will be available for individual consultations with students or parents. Middle and Upper School Counselors Leslie Palmer and Liz Clark will be available to students by appointment and will continue to lead advising efforts.
Director of Wellness Sandra Lopez-Morales, Ph.D., will lead the Saint Mary’s Hall Task Force on Equity and will continue working with a team to examine school climate and implement change to address equity and inclusion on campus. She will also continue to spearhead wellness offerings throughout campus and will be available for consultation by appointment.
