Form 7 Students Discussing Art History (ca 1957)
The Shield, Spring 2012

SMH Middle School Teacher Eleanor Duncan Sarratt, gathers a group of Form 7 girls (from the Class of 1962) to discuss their year-long art project … an art history notebook.

This picture, “Getting Help,” was published in the 1957 issue of La Reata, the school yearbook. Mrs. Sarratt would later go on to be the head of the Lower School.

Mrs. Sarratt required Form 7 students to put together an art history notebook which focused on European and American art. The students had to collect pictures (postcards, magazines, etc.) of specified artists’ paintings, write up copy about the artists' work, and display items in a scrapbook that was appropriately laid out and titled.

Form 7 Students pictured with Mrs. Sarratt (left to right): Madeleine Moreau Wright, Dorothy (Dee Dee) Peet Bankerd, Cynthia (Kathie) Helfer Walker, Susan Oppenheim Broer, Molly Kroschel, Anne Newton, Toby McClelland Tate, Laura Newton Barber, and Sabin Muir Nelson.
