Saint Mary’s Hall was founded in 1879 as an all-girls school. At the time, it was not common for women to participate in sports. However, when Head of School Rev. Arthur Burroughs took over in 1906, he was a proponent of adding “physical activity” to the curriculum. He felt that women, as much as men, needed physical activity. More than 140 years later, Saint Mary’s Hall offers a variety of sports for both female and male students.

Unfortunately, we did not receive any information on this photo. We love the outfits and hairstyles! We think the photo is from the 1920s and depicts the SMH tennis team.
