Office of Enrichment July 3, 2019 Week 6 Recap Week 6 was a short three-day camp but was definitely not short on fun! Just over 200 campers tried new things, made new friends, and improved their skills in a wide variety of academic, art, and enrichment courses.
I saw and heard several interesting things this week that reminded me why summer camps are so special and so critical for young people's growth. On the first day of camp as campers from our morning extended care program were joining others at the Field House to begin their camp day, I heard John G. say as he passed our off-duty SAPD office for the day, "Thank you for your service." What a touching and fitting statement in the week that our nation celebrates its independence!
On the second day of camp, as I waited for one of our campers to be picked up after morning camp, we talked about his experience in horse camp. He explained that it was his first time to be in horse camp which was surprising since he has been in multiple weeks of camps for many years. He admitted he has always been scared to try riding, but he finally decided to try this week and found out it wasn't as scary as he thought. In an effort to reassure him and bolster his confidence, a nearby summer staffer made a comment about how to handle a horse if the horse started going too fast. The camper was very quick to kindly correct her and rattle off a series of ways to control the horse in a scary situation. As he talked, I could tell how confident he had become in just two short days. What a special week for him as he conquered his fears!
On the last day, I watched the young crafty kids (ages 3-5) help each other with their last craft project for the week. They had a busy week making picture frames and maracas, and even doing leaf rubbings on a nature hike. Their interactions were simply adorable and once again reminded me how important and special our schools motto really is. "Teach Us Delight in Simple Things." These campers truly lived that motto this week and we look forward to all that Week 7 has in store next week.
Happy 4th of July to you all. Have a safe and blessed weekend with friends and family!
Sincerely, Laura Baker and the Summer at Saint Mary's Hall Staff Coming Up
