Women's Volleyball Program Overview
The Saint Mary’s Hall Volleyball Program has a strong tradition of competitive varsity teams. Some of our graduates have continued playing volleyball at Rollins College, John Hopkins University, Davidson College, Bentley University, Southwestern University, Williams College, Trinity University and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Volleyball at SMH continues to be a prominent sport; we have 2 teams in the Upper School and 3 teams in the Middle School. The varsity team plays a very competitive schedule of 20 regular matches consisting of non-district and district matches, 3 tournaments, and our TAPPS playoffs. We will participate in a TAPPS 5A district that consists of 9 teams - Saint Mary's Hall, Brownsville St. Joseph’s, Laredo St. Augustine, Victoria St. Joseph, San Antonio Christian, St. Anthony Catholic HS, Providence HS and TMI Episcopal School of Texas., The junior varsity team plays around 20 matches and 1 tournament, while the 8th Form and 7th Form teams have about 8-10 matches with a tournament at the end of their season. SMH does offer volleyball for 6th Form, 5th Form, and these girls play in round robin tournaments on Saturdays during the season. The SMH Volleyball Program has built its reputation of instilling our athletes with confidence, character, leadership and good sportsmanship. At the Lower School we focus on the fundamental basic skills of passing and serving and teamwork while introducing the games to the students. At the Middle School level we focus on instruction, fundamentals, good sportsmanship and developing the player to have a good understanding of the game while being competitive and committed. At the Upper School level we continue that process and start to focus on the mental aspect of the game with more strategies as we subject the athletes to tough challenges and practices so they can see the value of hard work. The overall goal of this program is to instill these values and skills in our athletes by fostering an inclusive volleyball community. The varsity team has enjoyed success winning the SPC Division 1 Championships in 2002, 2003 and runner-up in 2004. SMH was also the Division 2 Champions in 2005 & 2006. All practices and home matches take place in the renovated McCombs Family Athletic Complex and the new Ancira Event Center.
