Overview
Men's Basketball Program Overview
The basketball program at SMH is growing by leaps and bounds. We recently renovated our two existing gyms and have also added the Ancira Events Center with two more full size courts. Our program consists of multiple teams from the Lower and Middle Schools, and 3 Upper School teams. These courts will allow for more significant practice time and game opportunities for all levels of our basketball program.
The varsity program plays an extremely competitive schedule in TAPPS 5A District 3. While each year we do have some players for whom basketball is their only varsity sport, the vast majority of our players are talented multi-sport varsity athletes. We are very glad that most of our players continue the proud prep school tradition of participating in multiple sports.
Our program focuses on teaching the fundamentals. Everyone in the program will learn about how to be a good teammate and to work together to pursue a common goal. We hope that each of the boys will learn the value of hard work, teamwork, competitiveness, and respect that will help them to be successful in every area of their life.

Coach Gaines brings an exceptional blend of playing and coaching experience at the highest levels of the game. A standout at the University of Louisville, where he was an AP All-American and team captain, Gaines went on to play professionally in the NBA and across Europe before transitioning into coaching. Over the past decade, he has developed a reputation as a dynamic recruiter, player developer, and program builder, with coaching stops at Bellarmine University, Eastern Kentucky University, and with the Austin Spurs of the NBA G-League. Most recently, he served on the staff of the University of Louisville Men’s Basketball Program, where he contributed to player development, scouting, and alumni/donor relations. Coach Gaines has worked closely with and helped develop players who have gone on to succeed at the highest levels, including Keldon Johnson (San Antonio Spurs), Tre Jones (San Antonio Spurs), and Luka Samanic (Utah Jazz). His deep knowledge of the game, leadership skills, and ability to mentor young athletes make him an outstanding fit to lead our program forward. “I am thrilled to join the Saint Mary’s Hall community,” Gaines said. “This is a special opportunity to build a program that develops student-athletes on and off the court while competing at the highest level. I look forward to working with our players, families, and the broader community to create something truly special.” |
