With spring comes renewal and new beginnings, and for Saint Mary’s Hall, it is a time for celebrating as a community as we approach the end of the school year. We look forward to many exciting events and honored traditions. We are also actively planning the 2021-2022 school year with a continued focus on elevating the student experience at SMH.
I would like to share just some of the happenings at our great School:
- At SMH, we love our grandparents! On April 1, we celebrated our first Virtual Grand Day, which included a special grandparents’ message from me as well as heartwarming videos from our students across all divisions. SMH grandparents received a special invitation to participate in this virtual experience in the mail. The invitation also contained a few treats – “a cup of tea” and a "Proud Baron Grandparent" window decal. If you missed it, visit www.smhall.org/GrandDay. Virtual Grand Day will be available until Friday, April 30.
- Our bowling team made it to State last month. They were among only two private-school teams to compete with the majority being large public schools. They now set their sights to State competition on April 10 at Bandera Bowl, which will be livestreamed here.
- Our Lower School premiered their Form 5 Production, Channel 1 News, and our Upper School held their Drama Production, Over the River & Through the Woods. You can view these inspired performances on the Vimeo Fine Arts Showcase and the SMH Fine Arts page to learn more about upcoming productions.
- Our varsity women’s golf team competed in four tournaments these past two months and have finished first in each one. In their second track meet of the season, our varsity track team had 10 top-three medaling performances. Our women’s relay team broke the school records in both the 4x100 and 4x200. For the 4x100, they currently hold the fastest time with the only time less than 50 in TAPPS 5A and are ranked #2 in all of TAPPS. Additionally, two of our varsity tennis players are headed to the TAPPS District 4, 5A State Tournament.
Saint Mary’s Hall also has several honored traditions and milestones we look forward to celebrating. As this is my first year, I share for the first time in these special moments with you. In May, we will welcome, though virtually, our alumni home to their alma mater during Alumni Weekend. Our seniors will join together next month for a group photo to reveal where they will be attending college during College T-Shirt Day. We are also thrilled to be holding our Form 5 and Form 8 Promotions as well as Commencement in person and on campus in May. Finally, though we are unable to hold our Passport gala on campus this year, we look forward to holding an online auction with many exciting packages up for the bidding. Stay tuned for details!
Don’t forget to take part in our summer camps offered by our Summer at Saint Mary’s Hall program. There are many great enrichment, athletic, fine art, and academic opportunities available to your students and the broader community.
A Quick Update on Scheduling
One of the key goals of our strategic plan is to create a new daily schedule. As you may know, we are collaborating with Independent School Management (ISM), a respected school partner who has guided countless independent schools through the process of designing an ideal schedule. View the communication we sent out last month regarding our partnership with ISM. Twice last month, our faculty and staff met with Dr. Andrew Taylor, an expert in school management, project-based learning, and faculty evaluation, who worked in independent schools for 22 years before joining ISM. Dr. Taylor presented on best practices, observations specific to our school, and several draft schedule prototypes to assist us in building a dynamic new schedule. Our internal team is hard at work using these insights to move the process forward and create a schedule specific to our school needs.
Major Dates Calendar for 2021-2022
If you are a planner like I am, you will be happy to know we have released our Major Dates Calendar for 2021-2022. You can view it for your planning purposes by clicking here or find it on the SMH Community Portal by going to Links & Downloads and clicking the All-School box.
Though this school year has looked different than previous years, our community has remained united and resilient, and I am honored and blessed to experience this every day. Let’s have a great finish to an amazing year as we look forward to a restful summer and an exciting 2021-2022. Go Barons!
