About Athletics

At Saint Mary’s Hall athletics plays a vital role in the development of all students. More than 80% of Upper and Middle School students play at least one sport and many athletes participate in as many as three sports annually.  Saint Mary’s Hall has produced many college-bound athletes ... attending schools such as the University of Texas, Rice, Harvard, Dartmouth, Rollins, Davidson, and Cornell.

Athletics Philosophy

Interscholastic athletics at Saint Mary’s Hall are an integral part of the school’s commitment to developing each student as a person. The athletic program instills the classical idea of a “sound mind in a sound body” with a dedication to the lasting values of personal integrity, responsibility, courage, perseverance, sportsmanship, and teamwork. These values benefit students not only for their active participation on Saint Mary’s Hall teams, but also for the rest of their lives.

Leagues

The Independent School Athletic League (ISAL) is the governing body for Middle School athletics, and is made up of 18 schools in San Antonio and the surrounding area.  The ISAL is dedicated to providing quality athletics in order to help prepare young people for a life of integrity and character.

The Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) is the governing body for Upper School athletics and is comprised of accredited independent schools in Texas and Oklahoma. The SPC provides and regulates athletic games and tournaments for boys and girls of all member schools.

Partners

To provide student-athletes with the best possible athletic experience, the Saint Mary's Hall Athletic Department partners with the following groups:

  • Max Preps. Touted as “America’s source for high school sports," this web site includes rankings, stat leader boards, schedules, and scores for high school teams and players across the country.
  • NCAA Eligibility Center. This service allows athletes to qualify for NCAA eligibility and view core course requirements by registering with the site. The NCAA Eligibility Center certifies that interested students meet necessary requirements to compete at the NCAA level.
  • San Antonio Express-News.  San Antonio's daily newspaper features regular articles and stats for high school level sports in and around the city.

Sports Performance Camps

Saint Mary’s Hall is proud to offer a variety of sports performance camps during the summer months in conjunction with our Summer @ the Hall Student Enrichment program. These camps are run by SMH varsity head coaches and student-athletes to help teach the fundamentals of the game as well as provide insight on how campers can improve their skills.  The focus of the camps is to provide quality instruction from our experienced coaching staff.

The camps are open to students both within Saint Mary’s Hall and the surrounding San Antonio community.  If you are looking to improve your game, take advantage of this great opportunity.

Strength & Conditioning

The goal of athletics is to properly prepare student-athletes to maximize their physical potential while reducing the risk of injuries during an athletic season.  To help meet this goal, the state-of-the-art McFadin Fitness Center has been created to serve all members of the SMH community.

The McFadin Fitness Center is supervised by an experienced, full-time strength and conditioning coordinator.  Fitness classes are offered during school to Middle School students while Upper School students can enroll in after-school strength and conditioning classes which serve to train athletes in preparation for their upcoming season.

Trainer

Saint Mary’s Hall employs a full-time licensed athletic trainer. This individual works with all levels of student-athletes in injury diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. As student athletic trainers, students also have the opportunity to learn the kinesthetic aspects of the human body and to assist the athletic trainer in his daily duties.

Barons’ Club

The Barons' Club is composed of parents and other SMH sports fans who are dedicated to building school spirit and support for athletics throughout the community. They organize three Barons' Days during the school year which recognize the student-athletes participating in each of the athletic seasons – fall, winter, and spring.

Members of the Barons’ Club also act as team parents in support of all of the athletics teams at Saint Mary’s Hall, and host Parent Coffees during the school year that educate the community on various athletic topics like NCAA eligibility and conference alignment.
