Student Gets the Job Done

Student Gets the Job Done, (ca 1966)

The Shield, Spring 2014

Although computers are very much in our present, it wasn’t long ago that typewriters were indispensable tools for writing. Invented in the 1860s, the typewriter had become widely used by 1910. In this photo, Saint Mary’s Hall student Laura Darden Brown Reinowski (Class of 1966), is seen using a typewriter to fulfill her duties as the editor of the Walrus, SMH’s literary magazine. Laura and her sister, Mary Frances “Francie” Brown Shanks (Class of 1969), were boarding students, originally from Waco, Texas.

Special thanks to the following SMH community members for sending us picture details: Sara “Sally” Matthews Buchanan (Class of 1960), former student Christine “Chris” Hauser Hausser (Class of 1969), and Cornelia E. Frazier Muzquiz (Class of 1969).
