On October 15, Kindergarten students at Saint Mary’s Hall presented San Antonio Emergency Technician Dan Dickerson (a representative from the San Antonio Fire Department and proud SMH dad) with their donation of more than 50 teddy bears for children who fall victim to emergencies.

“Fireman Dan,” as he’s affectionately called by the students, took the opportunity to teach the students about fire safety and how to react in instances of emergency.  The San Antonio Fire Department also sent a fire truck and ambulance to campus so that the students could learn more about the tools that first responders use during emergencies. Additionally, the students timed one of the firemen as he got dressed in his full gear. The whole experience was a great way for students to learn about staying safe in emergencies, and also taught them not to be afraid of emergency vehicles or responders if they ever came to their homes.

Community service is an integral part of the Saint Mary’s Hall student experience. This project is one of the first community service initiatives undertaken by students at Saint Mary’s Hall. After doing chores at home to earn money, students used that money to purchase the teddy bears that they then donated. The teddy bear donation project teaches some of the youngest students on campus the importance of serving those in the community who are in need.  Although the students are sad to part with their new, furry friends, they understand that they are helping other children in the city feel safe.

The story of young children serving the community in such a selfless act was so inspiring that several local news stations and the San Antonio Express-News came to campus to cover the story. Feel free to take a moment to watch some of the news coverage Saint Mary’s Hall students earned by clicking the videos below.
