Montessori and Traditional Kindergarten Classrooms
Montessori/Kindergarten education at Saint Mary's Hall devotes itself to the total child -- the social, emotional, intellectual, and physical.
Montessori
Central to the Montessori philosophy is the idea of allowing each child to develop at his or her own individual pace. Classrooms are composed of a lead and assistant teacher with students ranging in age from 3-6 years old. Children in a Montessori classroom learn by making discoveries with the materials and by cultivating concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning. During a typical morning, children work independently as well as participate in group activities such as music, motor skills, and outside play. In the afternoon, the lead and assistant teachers work with the older students, giving detailed lessons in language, math, and geography. Library, computer, and science classes are offered weekly while P.E. and Spanish are scheduled three times a week.
Kindergarten
Saint Mary's Hall self-contained traditional Kindergarten classroom has a lead teacher and an assistant teacher. Children have many opportunities to attend computer classes during the week, music everyday, and physical education and Spanish three times a week. The children learn to use the library and the computer lab as a resource to their learning. They also have an opportunity to play outside everyday in self-selected activities.
